I am reading The Power of Habit, Why We Do What We Do In Life and Business by Charles Duhigg. I find this kind of reading fascinating. I will write more about the book later because it is raising all kinds of provoking thoughts and ideas. For now, however, I must keep this brief and get it online in order to get my 22nd post for the month up and not break my chain! (Remember, when I started the challenge, I allowed myself short posts like this. If I’d thought I had to write a “meaty” post every single day, I would never have begun. Just saying.)
Why am I reading the book? Because of this quote which I posted once this month already:
Watch your thoughts, they become words.Watch your words, they become actions.Watch your actions, they become habits.Watch your habits, they become your character.Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to automate certain behaviors that you know would change your life, your destiny? It can be done; we’ve already done it numerous times. You brush your teeth daily, don’t you? Do you have to use your willpower to accomplish that little personal health habit? I hope not. More likely, you’ve made this healthy routine a habit. If you think about it, you will be able to list of lot of behaviors that you have “automated” over the course of your life.
I am reading The Power of Habit to learn the science behind building habits so I can use that science to my advantage. Some habits (usually bad ones!) are built on accident. The good ones are built on purpose. I’m planning to get so good at building habits that, well, I’ll change my destiny! I’m serious about this!
This is Day 22 of the 30-Day Challenge. So far I haven’t broken the chain. I am excited because I am over halfway, but I also realize that this will be my toughest week, as I am in Trinidad for the week, and I’m in intense meetings all day long. But I’m pressing on!
